Frequently Asked Questions

What is Beef Jerky?

Beef Jerky is a flavorful, long-lasting, ready-to-eat meat snack, originally from America. It is thinly sliced lean beef, dried, smoked and seasoned. To make 100 grams of Jerky, you need over 225 grams of lean beef.

What is the origin of Beef Jerky?

Some say Jerky originated with American natives; the Native Americans, thousands of years ago. They would make the Jerky primarily from buffalo meat. Indians were looking for a nutritious meal that would last a long time and be easy to take on the road. They used the sun, wind and fire to do this. Thinly sliced strips of buffalo meat dried them in the sun, smoked them over fire and seasoned them with homemade mixtures.
Others say that around 1550, an ancient Inca tribe, Quechua, invented the Jerky. This tribe called the meat Ch’arki, which is a name for dry, salted meat. Ch’arki was later bastardized to Jerky.
The Quechua lived in the Andes (present-day Peru), where they put the Jerky in the hot sun during the day and stored it in the freezing cold at night, high in the mountains. The Quechua mainly used llama and alpaca meat.
Wherever jerky originally came from, the recipes have been passed down from generation to generation and perfected with today’s techniques.
